Five hundred and ninety five copies of questionnaire were distributed to the students out of which only 384 were returned with useful responses giving a response rate of 64.5%, The descriptive technique using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores and ranking as well as inferential technique of pearson product moment correlation were adopted for data analysis. The main instrument of data collection was the questionnaire designed by the researcher for the study. The multi-stage sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 595 senior secondary school two students to form the respondents for the study. Three specific objectives were set for the study while four research questions were answered. Design/Methodology/Approach: The survey research design method of the correlational type was adopted for this study. This is part of a larger study carried out to investigate factors predicting reading habits of secondary school students in Ogun State. The teachers and the society at large should be very careful about how they handle academic issues and there should not be gender bias or discrimination.Ībstract: Purpose: This study was carried out to investigate the extent to which parental background factors predict reading habits among secondary school students in Ogun State, Nigeria. Guidance programme should be strengthened in order to improve the academic performance and study habits of boys and girls in secondary schools in the area. The parents, teachers and counsellors should move closer to students, know their problems and provide help where necessary. Government should create more vocational centres for training of students or young people. Some recommendations and implications for counselling were stated as the way forward and they are: For better academic performance of students in secondary schools, every school should have a functional guidance and counselling unit with professional counsellors as the head. The findings revealed that in this research setting: study habit, guidance services have significant impact on academic performance of adolescents there is a significant impact of guidance services on study habit of adolescents also, there is a gender difference on students’ academic performance due to study habit finally, there is a gender difference on students’ academic performance due to provision of guidance services in this research area. The research hypotheses 1 – 5 were tested using T-test statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. A structured questionnaire was used in the data collection. Two hundred (200) respondents were randomly selected as sample for this study. The population of this study consisted of all adolescents and students in educational district IV of Lagos state. The descriptive survey research was used to conduct the study. Five research questions and five research hypotheses were formulated to guide in the study. This study examined the impact of study habits and guidance services on academic performance of adolescents in educational district IV of Lagos state.
